Range is battery divided by consumption
An e-bike's range is the energy in its battery (watt-hours) divided by the energy it uses per mile. The battery size is fixed and printed on most product pages. The consumption is not: it moves with your weight, the hills, the wind, your speed and how much assist you ask for. That is why every advertised range comes with a condition, or should.
Divide the battery by the advertised maximum and you see what each brand assumed. Across our check it runs from 5.0 to 17.3 watt-hours per advertised mile [calc]: the lowest figures come from light road and city bikes in their gentlest mode, the highest from heavy moped-style bikes.
What each brand says about its range
- Aventon: "Max range is estimated based on a rider weighing 165 lbs (75 kg) on a paved, flat road, in Eco Mode, with Ride Tune set to the default settings. Actual range will vary depending on rider weight, terrain, weather conditions, tire pressure, and cadence."
- Velotric: "A 187-lb rider using PAS 1 in Eco mode on flat roads" (on most pages; "using Eco mode" or "using PAS 1" on some). Velotric also prints a separate throttle range.
- Lectric: "Range can vary due to weight load, terrain, weather and other conditions." No test rider or mode is given.
- Ride1Up: a span rather than a maximum ("30-60 miles"), "depending on rider weight, terrain, incline, level of assist, etc."
- Himiway: no conditions on the nine product pages we read; the newer models list a pedal-assist and a throttle range.

How to use these numbers
- Compare batteries, not ranges. Two bikes advertising 70 miles can carry 352.8 Wh (Velotric T1) or 720 Wh (Himiway D5 2.0): the second has twice the energy, and its brand simply assumes a heavier, slower ride per mile, or states no conditions at all.
- Plan on less than the maximum. The advertised figure is the lowest assist on flat ground. Hills, Class 3 speeds and the throttle all cost more watt-hours per mile.
- Need more? Some bikes take a second battery (Lectric XPedition2 Dual-Battery: 1,248 Wh, or 1,680 Wh on the Long-Range version). Every battery size is in e-bike battery watt-hours explained.
What those watt-hours cost to put back in at your electricity price: e-bike cost per mile. Every bike side by side: the comparison.
Frequently asked questions
How far can an e-bike go on one charge?
On the pages we read, advertised maximums run from 40 miles (Ride1Up Roadster v3 and CF Racer1) to 170 miles (Lectric XPedition2 Long-Range Dual-Battery). Those are best cases: Aventon's are for a 165 lb rider in Eco mode on a flat paved road, Velotric's for a 187 lb rider in PAS 1.
How many miles can an e-bike go without pedaling?
Only Velotric and Himiway publish a separate throttle range on the pages we read, and it is lower than pedal-assist range: 65 miles throttle against 80 pedal assist for the Velotric Discover 3, 40 against 70 for the Himiway D5 2.0. Using the throttle most of the time, plan for the lower figure or less.
What drains an e-bike battery fastest?
The brands list the same factors in their fine print: rider weight, terrain, wind or weather, tire pressure, cadence and the assist level (Aventon, Lectric, Ride1Up). A higher assist level or the throttle, hills and a heavier load all raise the watt-hours used per mile.
How do I estimate my own range?
Divide your battery's watt-hours by the watt-hours your riding uses per mile. If you do not know that figure yet, start from the brand's advertised range as a ceiling and plan for half on hilly, fast or throttle-heavy rides until your own trips tell you more.
