Three numbers on every battery label
- Volts (V): the electrical "pressure" of the pack. In our check: 36 V (Aventon, which also prints 36.9 V on the Soltera 3, Velotric's lighter bikes, Ride1Up's road and commuter bikes), 48 V (most Velotric, Lectric and Himiway bikes), 52 V (Ride1Up Revv1).
- Amp-hours (Ah): how much charge it holds at that voltage.
- Watt-hours (Wh): the energy, volts times amp-hours. This is the one that sets range and the cost of a charge, and the one to compare.
Aventon prints all three ("Removable Internal Lithium-ion. 36V, 20Ah, 733Wh, LG 21700 cells"). Velotric too, sometimes without the amp-hours ("48V, 705.6Wh"). Three pages give volts and amp-hours but no watt-hours: Himiway A7 (48 V, 15 Ah, so 720 Wh [calc]) and Ride1Up Revv1 EVO and DRT (52 V, 20 Ah, so 1,040 Wh [calc]). Two give only amp-hours: Ride1Up's Portola 02 (10 or 15 Ah) and Vorsa (15 Ah), whose watt-hours we therefore cannot state.

Price per watt-hour is the bike's store price divided by its battery [calc]. It is not the price of the battery: it shows which bikes put the most energy on board for the money, from $1.19 per Wh (Lectric XPedition2 Long-Range Dual-Battery) to $8.51 (Ride1Up CF Racer1) in our check.
Battery safety: what the pages say, and what to do
Lithium-ion packs store a lot of energy in a small space. The pages we read cite two U.S. standards: UL 2271 for the battery and UL 2849 for the e-bike's electrical system. 43 of the 60 pages name UL 2849: all 16 Lectric pages, 14 of 15 Velotric, 8 of 12 Aventon, 5 of 8 Ride1Up, and none of the 9 Himiway pages (which does not mean those bikes are not certified, only that the page does not say). Whatever bike you choose, charge it with the charger the brand supplies, follow the brand's storage and charging instructions, and do not use a damaged pack.
What a full charge of each battery costs at your electricity price: e-bike cost per mile. How far each one is advertised to go: range on a charge. All the bikes: the comparison.
Frequently asked questions
What does Wh mean on an e-bike battery?
Watt-hours, the energy the battery stores: volts times amp-hours. A 48 V, 15 Ah battery holds 48 x 15 = 720 Wh [calc]. It is the number to compare between bikes, because amp-hours alone mean little when voltages differ (36 V, 48 V or 52 V in our check).
Is a higher voltage battery better?
Not by itself. A 36 V, 20 Ah Aventon pack (733 Wh) holds slightly more energy than a 48 V, 15 Ah Himiway pack (720 Wh). Compare watt-hours for range; voltage is one input to how the motor system is designed.
What is UL 2849 and UL 2271?
Two U.S. safety standards the product pages cite: UL 2271 for the battery pack ("certified to UL 2271" on most Lectric and Velotric pages) and UL 2849 for the e-bike electrical system as a whole. 43 of the 60 pages name UL 2849. We only report the wording; ask the brand for the certificate if it matters to you.
How many watt-hours do I need?
Enough for your longest regular ride with a margin. Take the watt-hours per mile your riding uses (our range page shows what each brand assumes, 5.0 to 17.3 Wh per advertised mile) and multiply by your distance, then add a margin for hills, cold and throttle use.
